Tennessee State University Essay - 870 Words
oppressed was through Jim Crow laws. These laws were especially seen at the voting polls. African Americans were harassed at the polls, threatened, forced to pay poll tax, forced to do literacy tests and even killed for voting. (americanhistory.si.edu). This kept the democratic party in power during this time. So with all of this happening to African Americans in the south the only way that was seen to escape this oppression was through education. The only education at this time allowed for African Americans in the south was a trade education. The same kind of education advocated by Booker T. Washington. The reason why this was the only kind allowed was to keep African Americans as the working class in the south and never to rise aboveâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦When Tennessee State University originally founded its goal and mission was to teach agricultural and industrial trade to African Americans. As before stated the reason for this was due to any other form of education that did not keep African Americans as the working class was not accepted in the Jim Crow south. The programs that the University has available reflected this mindset during the time. The programs that promoted trade that the University had were agricultural, industrial, home economics and engineering. As aforementioned these programs were meant for the prevention of the African American community from rising above poverty. This University was also seen as very difficult to teach at according to W.E.B. Du Boisââ¬â¢ letter to his future wife, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦you picked a very difficult place to start teachingâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Du Bois 1). The reason on why Du Bois would be saying that this is a difficult place to teach at might be due to the areaââ¬â¢s racism or due to having to teach trade skills to the students which Du Bois was very against advocating more of a traditional style of education over trade education. As time went on the University did change its original goals. Tennessee State University has changed their goals over the years of being active. Their original goal was to provide an industrial and agricultural education to the African American community.
